I thought Jackman's acting was brilliant, although it took me quite a while to become accustomed to his voice as Valjean - he's more reedy/nasal than the guys I've seen on stage or in the PBS concerts, who tend to be more full-throated. Still, it'd be rough for most of the stage guys to sustain the part when so much of it was close-ups, right?

I don't know if I'll ever get over the heartbreak of Anne Hathaway's performance as Fantine. The folks who say she stole the movie are 100% correct, and I kind of can't imagine anyone else even being nominated for best supporting actress as a result.

I liked Sasha Baron Cohen's performance a LOT, actually, and thought his outrageous French accent, which he dropped occasionally for a slangy British side-comment to Helena Bonham Carter, was hilarious. The rather graphic depiction of their dealings during Master of the House was a bit overwhelming in parts, but made the point so much better than the stage production that they were ALWAYS louts and thieves that I found it brilliant.

And my favorite tribute to the original show was not the bishop (although that was lovely), but the shot of the student leader dangling upside-down from the window, an homage to when they spin the barricade from the original show.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
